When I think of International Women’s Day, I think of all the incredible women in my life growing up, but three come to mind in particular. My Mother (known simply as K), whose birthday was March 10, her brother’s wife, my Auntie Susan, and my Mom’s half-sister, my Auntie Betty. They were completely different women in so many ways and yet so similar, each one was so VERY empowered in their own fabulous way. They were all magnanimous to me; I was SO blessed to have them in my life. I do miss them all so much. They were ahead of their time in regards to women’s empowerment. I smile whenever I think of them and wonder what it was I was to learn from each of their experiences. What I did learn was:
They all volunteered and helped others in so many ways. I remember family dinners and observing them and thinking, would I be a business owner like them, or was I to be a June Cleaver so to speak, or was I meant just to be me and do my own thing inspired by them. I never felt enough around them, although I know they all loved me and that negative thought wasn’t coming from anything they expressed. Once again it was me getting in my own way. Now that they are gone, I feel I still had so much more to learn from them. These ladies were born in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 40’s. All of them were strong, smart and driven women who overcame incredible obstacles. One was the first woman in Vancouver to enter the men’s club through their door. Does anyone remember when women and men had separate doors to enter schools and establishments? I do. One sat as the only women on a board of directors of a company controlled by men. One Aunt had her driver’s license until she was well into her 90's. And, one, my mother, died way too young and the world had so much more to learn from her. When she died, my mother left me funds, and I chose to use them to launch my business to perhaps follow in their footsteps, give back and help others in their journey. I will be starting a new initiative through The Women In Motion Business Group to facilitate women helping women rise from their situations and become successful. I have decided that March 8th to 10th is the perfect time in honor of my mother and these inspiring women. God bless the strong women in my life. I am so thankful for them. You see, it’s not the time period we live in, it’s not any of the excuses we tell ourselves, it’s our mindset. Who are you learning from? Who are you grateful for? What excuses are holding you back? I have sure had my fair share of them. No more! Time for us all to step into our power!
